So You Think You're Smart, Part V

There I was the other night at a poker table, doing my part to stimulate the economy by going all in with 7-2 when someone said this: "So there's this guy who leaves home, goes a little way, turns left, goes a little way, turns left, goes a little way again, then turns left and again goes a little way. When he returns home, a man was is waiting for him. Who is it?"

After a little reflection, I confidently gave the answer. What's yours?

todd sharp's Gravatar I wonder - could it be the catcher or the umpire?

Martijn van der Woud's Gravatar That's a tough one for your European readers Hal, baseball is not a major sport over here! :)

Hal's Gravatar As much as I love football (not the American variety), baseball is truly the thinking man's game, Martijn.

Brian Kotek's Gravatar I've never been much into sports in general, preferring to read or play Left 4 Dead. But I've gotten somewhat into ice hockey. Baseball is too slow, a whole game can go by without anyone even hitting the darn ball (and that's considered GOOD!) Football is too start-and-stop, the plays only last a few seconds and then you're waiting for another 3 minutes. Basketball at least has fairly continuous action, but not enough physical contact. Hockey is the only one that has everything: continuous play, blazing fast, game can change in an instant, and crushing checks. Throw in fighting (yes, yes, I know, it's low-brow but you know you'd watch it) and it's a pretty good package.

All that said, I never get that into it. I refuse to place my emotional well-being into the hands of a bunch of strangers on TV! hehe

todd sharp's Gravatar Brian:

Interesting analysis. I wonder if any of that has to do with the fact that you live in a state that has no major sports teams whatsoever. Did you grow up in NC? Just wondering.

As for me, I grew up in an area that is very blue collar, and _very_ 'into' it's sports teams. Add the fact that we haven't won a major sports championship since my dad was 13 yrs old (1964) and there is quite an infatuation - almost obsession - with our sports teams. To make matters worse we've been tortured with so many 'near misses' that it's not even funny. For example, the 1997 Indians (baseball) went into the 9th inning of the deciding 7th game of the World Series with the lead and ended up losing.

Yes, it is an emotional investment. A huge one for some of us. We get excited, to the brink of 'winning it all' only to be let down.

My wife, and likely you too, think I'm crazy when I say that if we ever do get a championship I'll cry like a baby. Silly, yes, but true.

Brian Kotek's Gravatar No I grew up in Chicago. To be fair, while Raleigh doesn't have any other pro teams (except hockey, unless you count the Panthers), this area is ridiculously saturated with huge college basketball teams (State, Chapel Hill, Duke, etc.) so that is where most people invest their time.

todd sharp's Gravatar Ah Chicago -- so you're familiar with some of the proverbial daggers that Michael Jordan shoved into our collective hearts?

John Quarto-vonTivadar's Gravatar can it be a cop waiting for the guy? Because it sounds like The Drunken Sailor, a variation on a Monte Carlo random walk. Maybe the Sailor is DUI in car, just cuz it's a random "walk" doesn't mean literally legs are involved.

[Then again, if the drunken sailor has no legs, is he still a sailor, or rather a disabled Vet? And if he has no legs, how does he drunkenly drive the car? Oh wait, Kotek is on this thread so I suppose the response should be "That's just an edge case" :) ]

Hal's Gravatar @John, reading over your "reasoning", I think we may have found the drunken sailor...

Oh, snap!
