Ready to Learn Ruby on Rails?

I've heard from quite a few programmers who are interested in putting their toe in the RoR waters. It is a big step -- and to make that as non-stressful as possible, I'm going to hold a free two-hour online "Intro to Ruby on Rails for ColdFusion Programmers" training on September 22 from 12.30 to 2.30 Eastern US time.

The training will consist of a brief overview of how Rails works, followed by the building of an actual application. If you are at all like me, I think you'll be shocked by just how much work can be done very quickly with RoR. So, here's a cheap (cheap as in free!) way to learn whether the RoR phenomenon is real or just more hype. The online limit for the software I'm using is 100 people. If you're interested, sign up at...

nako's Gravatar You left the CF community now you're trying to take it with you?

ROR is no longer buzz word compliant

Tony Garcia's Gravatar It's comments that like nako's that reflect how insular the CF community can sometimes be, and frankly it makes us look bad. I've recently been interested in learning a little Python/Django, but in no way does that necessarily mean that I'm "leaving" CFML. The fact is that there is a lot of value in opening up your mind and at least experimenting with other languages/technologies. It helps you look at things with a fresh perspective and can be valueable in inspiring you try do new things with the language you are familiar with.
I would probably sign up for this RoR training if I didn't have a time conflict. Thanks anyway, Hal.

Aaron's Gravatar I dabbled in Rails a few months ago and I must say, it made me a better CF dev. For example, check out how Rails handles db changes with migrations. I now use some of the same concepts in CF and it has helped me tremendously.

The way I see it, the more languages that you're exposed to, the better you become as a <em>programmer</em>. I'm very excited to see how Hal bridges some of the CF -> Rails gaps that tripped me up.

Aaron West's Gravatar I'm with Tony, I think this is a good opportunity to learn more about Rails from someone who knows and understands ColdFusion. Attending Hal's session doesn't mean someone is going to stop coding in ColdFusion. It just means someone is interested in understanding or learning more about another programming language. Thanks for offering this Hal.

Dan O'Keefe's Gravatar Broaden your horizons and expand your knowledge. Thanks for your valuable insight and time Hal, I will be there.

Charlie Griefer's Gravatar +1 Tony/Aaron^2/Dan.

Learning something new doesn't mean you're leaving CF (or whatever your "current technology" is).

Learn as much as possible. Make yourself marketable.

Personally, I love CF. Always have, always will. But I'm looking to learn Ruby, Python, and a few other languages. I have no intention of "leaving" CF, or it's community.

I hate to whip out a tired old cliche, but when the only tool you have is a hammer...

(and obviously, this doesn't only apply to CF developers...)

Raymond Camden's Gravatar Not to jump on the pile here, but I'll ditto the others. I take issue with _some_ of the other entries Hal has made - and I hope Hal takes that as a respectful disagreement - but this entry is about as innocent as can be, and offering up free training as well. Don't like the idea of learning Ruby? Don't show up. Problem solved.

Manithan's Gravatar learned about groovy and grails which i am using with CF. I would like learn new stuff. can Ruby could be used with CF like jRuby ?

Hal Helms's Gravatar Amen, Ray. You my man.

Marcos Placona's Gravatar I'm totally keen on it Hal, and think it's a great effort you're putting up to help others.

Comments like nako's should be simply deleted, as they don't aggregate in any sort.

like Ray, I also disagree with some of your previous posts (in a respectful way though), but this is just a great way to get your credibility back (at least with me) ;-)

Jokes apart, well done for the effort, and I'm looking forward to it :-)

Ryan LeTulle's Gravatar I am looking forward to the class.

Marko Simic's Gravatar See you on 22nd! Thank you.

David McGuigan's Gravatar Just registered, excited for this! PS the comment pop up opens in another tab in Safari on OS X and doesn't transfer focus to it. I clicked it about 4 times before I realized what was going on ( it tacked it way at the end of my tabs stack so there were 5 tabs between your entry and the comment form ).

Gabe C's Gravatar Is this going to be recorded? I can't get in because it is full.
# Posted By Gabe C | 9/14/10 12:37 PM
Hal Helms's Gravatar Gabe, I'm not sure if we're going to record this or not. What I am going to do is offer the class again on Nov. 16. Signup here: http://railsintro2.eventbrite.com/

Hal Helms's Gravatar Yikes, my bad! That login info was for a meeting, not the webinar. If you signed up, you should receive an email with instructions.
# Posted By Hal Helms | 9/22/10 12:34 PM
Adam J. Blust's Gravatar I signed up, and the info I got by email is the same as you mention here. And I'm connected, but it still says "Waiting for Organizer..." Am I doing something wrong? I hate to miss your session.
# Posted By Adam J. Blust | 9/22/10 3:05 PM
Adam J. Blust's Gravatar I didn't see this morning's correction email, because it went in my Junk folder. So I missed the first 40 minutes of the session. I will sign up for the November session.

Shaun W.'s Gravatar Thanks for the intro to RoR Hal!

It was just enough to spark an interest in Rails and show off some of it's awesome features.
# Posted By Shaun W. | 9/22/10 5:30 PM
Marko Simic's Gravatar I would also like you thank you for your time and effort.
Excellent intro to RoR.
# Posted By Marko Simic | 9/22/10 5:34 PM
Drew's Gravatar Thanks a lot for the Rails intro Hal. Its all too often new technology is touted as the solution to all, but they fail to ever provide good learning tools. I have to agree with your comments on Rails books. I bought the Agile Web Development book which everyone said was the best Rails book. I got through a good 100 pages, but still don't understand hardly any of the magic of how Rails works.

Thanks, take care

Matthew's Gravatar Hi Hal
I totally missed this training you ran. I've been looking into RoR lately and am gutted to have missed this. Any chance of you running it again for 2011?

Brian Atwood's Gravatar Great blog article about this topic, I have been lately in your blog once or twice now. I just wanted to say hi and show my thanks for the information provided.

Fernando Lopez's Gravatar Hi, I just started setting up a VM with all the tools I need for RoR and came across this post. is there a recording of the presentation? if not would this be available in 2011?
